GENESIS CHAPTER 2 EXPANDED SUMMARY
Genesis 2: 1-3: God’s Rest from His creative acts on the seventh day, and the sanctification of the seventh day as Holy
  • God completed His work of creation—the heavens, the earth and all the associated hosts
  • God rested on the seventh day from all His work, after having finished all His creative works the days before
  • God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, calling it Holy due to the fact that He rested on the seventh day from all His creative works.
Genesis 2: 4-6: The account/histories of the creation of the heavens and the earth before the existence of  vegetation or of humans to till the ground (i.e. before Creation Day 3), when a mist went up from the earth to water the whole surface of the ground.
  • The histories (generations/account) of the heavens and the earth in the day that the LORD God made the earth and heavens  before any shrub or herb had yet appeared because the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) had not caused it to rain on the earth, neither had humans yet been created to till the land
  • At which time a mist went up from the earth and moistened (watered) the whole surface of the ground.
Genesis 2: 7-17: The Creation of Man. The Details include: Details of the creation of man from dust, Details of the Garden that the LORD God created, Details of the LORD God’s placing man in the garden to till and care for (guard) it and Details of the LORD God’s instruction and  warning to man regarding the eating of the trees in the Garden.
  • The LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, thus animating the form to become a living being (soul).
  • The LORD God planted a garden in Eden in the East and placed the man in the Garden. The following characteristics in reference to the garden are mentioned:
  1. The Garden was located in Eden in the East
  2. Man was placed by the LORD God in the Garden
  3. Out of the ground, the LORD God enabled the springing of every tree that was pleasing to behold and good for food, including the Tree of Life in the middle of the Garden as well as the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
  4. Out of Eden a river flowed to water the Garden, which split into four rivers:
  • PISHON: The river named Pishon flowed around the entire land of Havilah where gold was located—the gold reportedly was good, with other available mineral deposits which included bdellium and onyx.
  • GIHON: This river flowed around the whole land of Cush
  • TIGRIS: This river flowed east of Assyria
  • EUPHRATES: This river was the fourth branch
5. The LORD God placed the man in the Garden :
  • The man was commanded to eat of all the trees of the Garden and to Till and preserve (guard/ take care of) it
  • The man was instructed and warned  regarding the liberty with which he could eat of all the trees in the Garden BUT not of the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil”, because eating that fruit, would result in death.
Genesis 2: 18-25: The Creation of Woman. The Details include: The LORD God’s desire and initiative to prevent loneliness in Man (Ish) by creating a helper fit for Man; The Man naming every beast of the field and bird of the air brought to him by God; The Man’s discovery of his aloneness; The LORD God’s creation of Woman from Adam’s side after causing Adam to go into a deep sleep and subsequently presenting her to Adam; Adam’s exultant exclamation and acknowledgment of Eve as part of his bone and flesh and Adam’s subsequent naming of her as Woman (Isha); The narrator’s presentation of the reason for a man Leaving his parents and Joining with his wife as “one flesh” rooted in the union between Adam and Eve; The first pair’s innocence (lack of shame) in their mutual nakedness.
  • The LORD God declares that it was not appropriate (i.e. not good) for Man to be alone and decided that He will make Man a helper fit for him.
  • The detail that it was out of the ground that the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air
  • These living creatures were brought to the Man to be named, and the Man proceeded to name all creatures—including all livestock, birds of the air and every beast of the field.
  • None of these creatures were found to be suitable as a helper for Man
  • The LORD God then proceeded to induce a deep sleep in Man, and while Man slept, He took one of his ribs (side) and closed up Man’s side with flesh. Subsequently the LORD God fashioned a Woman from the rib taken from Man and brought the Woman to Man
  • The Man acknowledged that she was at last bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh and proceeded to name her Woman (Isha) due to the fact that she was taken out of Man (Ish).
  • The writer records that a Man will leave his father and mother and join (hold fast) to his wife and they will become one flesh, based upon the union of Adam and Eve
  • Both the man and his wife were naked and unashamed
